Type: RFP / RFQ
Category: Public art
Salary: $5,000 stipend
Deadline: March 31, 2017

Job description

Open Call: Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the creation of large-scale downtown murals!

Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Public Art and Placemaking initiatives include the creation of distinctive works of public art in WeDo™ — the West Downtown MPLS Cultural District. This coming spring and summer, the Trust will partner with business and property owners to commission Minnesota-based artists/artist teams to complete new large-scale murals along Hennepin Avenue (between 5th and 10th streets).

All Request for Qualifications (RFQ) submissions will be reviewed by the Trust’s Arts Advisory Panel. Finalists will be chosen by the panel and paid a $250 stipend to create a mockup design — based on the secured site dimensions. All finalists will be asked to participate in a brief, informal interview with the Trust’s Director of Public Art and Placemaking. Two artists/artist teams will be selected.

The Trust’s Director of Public Art and Placemaking will work collaboratively with the two selected artists/artist teams to negotiate contracts, payment, deliverables and timeline — and assist with the negotiation of a final design (subject to approval by participating property owners).

Each of the two commissioned artists/artist teams will also receive a $5,000 stipend, as well as overall project management and support, equipment rental, labor assistance, insurance, permits, and materials assistance from the Trust.

Project Timeline and Tasks:

• Now – March 31, 2017: RFQ open call

• April: The Trust’s Arts Advisory Panel reviews RFQs and makes finalists recommendations, finalists interviewed, sites confirmed, artists selected, designs produced and approved and contracts signed

• May: Mural work begins

• June-July: Mural work continues and is completed

Qualifications or requirements

This call is open to established and emerging artists, or artist teams, with priority given to artists from communities of color who have a strong connection to Hennepin Avenue and who have demonstrated experience in managing a project of this magnitude.
