The Digital Media Intern is responsible for capturing a wide range of museum experiences, from experiences in the galleries and traveling exhibits to daily on-going programs to special events. The intern will utilize a variety of mediums including written documentation, photography, sound and video. This qualitative data will be utilized for documenting learning experiences, as well as archiving and training purposes. The intern will also capture promotional and training content for cross-departmental projects.
Ideal candidates will have strong cinematography and video editing skills, as well as a passion for the art of storytelling through the capturing of the authentic voices of children and their caregivers during learning experiences. Through the use of transcription, video and voice recording, and photography the intern will collect and help to synthesis the stories of the Museum’s experiences. A flexible schedule is preferred.
This position works in partnership with Learning & Impact and Museum Experience staff.
Major Job Accountabilities
This is an estimate of the duties to be included in the internship. The exact duties and projects will be determined by mutual agreement of the intern and museum staff. All duties will be carried out with the direction and supervision of Learning & Impact staff.
•Edit footage, produce video (using onsite or personal equipment) following the Museum’s documented graphic standards, and develop the capacity for documenting the work and ideas of both children and adults within learning environments.
•Work with Learning Experience Specialist and Museum Experience Manager to synthesize, catalogue and store both finished documentation and the collected artifacts.
•Take video footage, capture notes, dialogue, and photos using either the Museum’s HD recorder or personal equipment*; ensure consent forms are signed when necessary. Meet customer service & museum learning expectations at all times when on the Museum floor.
•Work with supervisor to plan projects. Attend meetings/trainings/programs as needed to understand how videos and documentation will be used. Follow guidelines set by supervisor for capturing ideal aspects of program/facilitator footage. Prepare and submit pre-production elements like a script (detailing use of voiceovers and outlining shots for the overall narrative of the video) as well as photos, transcriptions, and videos for approval. Maintain good communication with supervisor as projects progress, seeking approval for any changes as necessary.
Qualifications or requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1.Skill and experience in using cameras, transcribing dialogue, digital video production, filming (especially experience with filming candid/live-action video), editing and finishing. Knowledge and experience with capturing children on video is preferred.
2.Experience producing videos for publishing on Youtube, Vimeo, and Instagram
3.Experience in one or more of the following software:video production (iMovie, Adobe Premiere, etc.), photo editing (Photoshop, Pixlr)
4.Some understanding of experiential learning and the use of documentation to capture learning experiences.
5.Skill in coordinating tasks and projects.
6.Ability to work well with people.
7.Flexible schedule with ability to work at various times and days throughout the course of the week.
8.Ability to organize time and work independently, follow directions and complete tasks in an effective manner.
