Presented in partnership with Sound Scape Studio
This workshop focuses on how to protect and monetize that work through a practical understanding of intellectual property (IP) and music licensing. We’ll cover the essentials of copyright (what it protects, when it’s created, and why registration matters), joint ownership and collaboration, and what to do if your music is infringed. We’ll also cover mechanical, sync, and performance rights; how Performance Rights Organizations (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) work; what the Music Modernization Act means for digital royalties; and how to approach licensing requests strategically. Whether you are recording traditional songs, collaborating across generations, or releasing original work online, this session will help you set up systems that protect your rights and support long-term sustainability as a working musician.
