This panel discussion with attorney Walter G. Lehmann and artist Moira “Miri” Villiard will explore the legal and professional aspects of how public art is commissioned, created and maintained. The discussion will include an overview of the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA), basics of copyright and work-for-hire, and how artists and organizations can draft contracts that ensure fair compensation, proper attribution and a plan for upkeep. Walter G. Lehmann (he/him) is the managing partner of Lehmann PLC (formerly Lehmann Strobel PC). With over 25 years of experience as an attorney and business consultant, Walter has represented independent producers, artists, and writers, as well as museums and arts and cultural organizations of all kinds. He is also an appraiser of fine and decorative art. He has served on the board of directors of numerous arts-related nonprofits, including the Landis Valley Museum Associates and the North Museum of Natural History and Science, where he also served as interim Curator of Collections. He was also a member of the Walters Art Museum Collections Committee. and is currently a board member of The M.

 

 

Moira “Miri” Villiard (she/her) grew up on the Fond du Lac Reservation in Cloquet, MN and is a Fond du Lac direct descendent. Through public art collaborations across Minnesota, Villiard is a multidisciplinary artist who uses art to uplift underrepresented narratives, explore the nuance of society’s historical community intersections, and promote community healing spaces. She is proficient in a variety of artistic genres, but considers her primary medium to be space and people’s interactions with it. www.artbymoira.com

 

 

Cecilia Cornejo (she/her) is a Chilean-born documentary filmmaker, artist, and teacher based in Northfield, Minnesota. Known for placing community members at the center of the creative process, she uses a range of approaches and production methodologies to engage them as active participants and co-creators of meaning. Locally rooted yet globally minded, her work examines notions of belonging and the immigrant experience while exploring the traces of historical trauma on people and places. Cecilia is an inaugural recipient of the 2020 McKnight Fellowship for Community-Engaged Artists and has received support from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC), the Jerome Foundation, and the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council.
