Join artist Kandace Creel Falcón, Ph.D. at Springboard for the Arts in Fergus Falls for an artist talk about their work “In the Red,” a time-based meditation and installation on the predatory nature of student loan debt.
No longer willing to carry the individual burden of their student loan debt alone, Kandace began making flag bunting banners in October 2023 when the federal pause on student loan repayment resumed. For a full year, Kandace created a banner each month with their updated figure following their loan repayments. The completed collection of 12 banners is on view at Springboard for the Arts in Fergus Falls, MN.
Each hand-stitched, painted, and machine-sewn banner represents the accumulation of interest on loans, the crushing emotional weight of making payments and the slow, incremental decrease of the total debt owed.
