Receive some in-person guidance from a video professional on editing your project in Adobe Premiere Pro. Filmmakers John Vang and Kazua Melissa Vang will be on-hand to provide hour-long tutorials on trimming and arranging clips, adding graphics and text, adjusting color, working with audio and exporting your video. Attendees may bring video footage of up to 30 minutes that they’re interested in editing. Experience with Premiere Pro is not required, but if you’d like to continue to use it after your session, you may need to purchase a subscription.

Special Topics is a monthly series when regular Resource Lab staff are joined by special guests to provide free 1:1 in person assistance on a variety of subjects, with a focus on technological, legal and financial needs.

John Vang (he/him) is Hmong American filmmaker in the Twin Cities. His filmmaking practice is rooted in amplifying Hmong Minnesotan voices. He has served as a cinematographer for various local Hmong filmmakers such as Yeej Moua’s ‘The Wind Always Strikes the Highest Mountain,’ and Kazua Melissa Vang’s ‘The Chaperones.’ Currently he is the editor for May Lee Yang and Peter Yang’s ‘Hmong Organization,’ a comedic web series. In his free time, he enjoys long hikes, camping and fishing.

Kazua Melissa Vang (she/her) finds inspiration from romance novels, the art and narratives of anime, and the joy of imagination and collaborative storytelling of tabletop role-play. She’s a multidisciplinary artist, cultural producer and filmmaker who critically explores the present and past of the Hmong American experience, sprinkling in comedy, drama and fantasy elements. She co-founded the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Minnesota Film Collective to support the economic vitality and create space and opportunities for AAPI filmmakers. Rooted in her values to have authentic and meaningful relationships, she mentors young photographers, storytellers and filmmakers for In Progress, a non-profit organization based in St. Paul, MN, to empower them to pursue their creative endeavors. Her production credits include BITTERROOT (Tribeca 2024), the pilot web series HMONG ORGANIZATION, THE STRANGER, and the episodic pilot NICE (Tribeca 2018). She’s received grants from the Minnesota State Art Board, Forecast Public Art, Jerome Foundation, and the St. Paul & Minnesota Foundation.
