Already insured through Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare?

A person's eligiblity for MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance is reviewed once a year. You will get a notice if your eligiblity is being reviewed. You do not need to do anything until you get this notice. It is possible your eligibility will be renewed automatically and you will not need to do anything.

Applying for health insurance on MNsure for the first time? Here’s info about the process:

- Create a MNsure account (pick a username and password). Go here and click the “create account & apply” button.

- Once you log into your account, fill out and submit an application (please ask us questions along the way!). If you’d like to apply for free or discounted insurance, click the application labeled “individuals and families—apply for health insurance with discounts.“ Alternatively, if you don’t want to apply for free or discounted insurance, you can select the application labeled “without discounts;” this is a shorter application that does not ask questions about your family’s income.

- Once you submit your application, you’ll see a webpage that will tell you what you qualify for.*

If the webpage says you qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, you will get a letter in the mail from the Minnesota Department of Health or the county you live in. This will have more info about the next step that you need to take to complete enrollment (send in proof of income; choose a health insurance plan; pay your first month’s premium). Or, if you qualify for free insurance and it’s determined that you don’t need to send in any proof of income, you’ll be given information about insurance plan options and how to enroll. If you don't receive a letter in the mail within a week, please contact us and we can call MNsure to see what's up.

If you submit an application and it says you qualify for private health insurance (with or without a tax credit), you must select a plan and enroll. If you want help with this, we recommend you contact a health insurance broker. We have a list of brokers here.

*If you think you qualify for free or reduced cost insurance, but the webpage says you don’t, make sure to call 1-855-3MNsure to verify and ask why.

If you’d like to ask a question, please use this Contact Form. You can also check out this calendar to find events presented by organizations across Minnesota. Springboard can help you fill out the MNsure application and answer questions about the health insurance requirement. Please note that Springboard for the Arts cannot give advice about which health plan to choose, but we are happy to refer you to a broker or health insurance provider.
