This position will work under the general supervision of the Program & Facility Coordinator at Zanewood Recreation Center. This position will assist with developing positive programs and partnerships with community organizations to increase opportunities for teens/youth to participate in positive leisure time activities that provide safe and supervised activities for teens. This position will work with the Youth Services Manager to create, implement and enhance youth engagement and public art opportunities for youth in the City’s civic and social infrastructure.
This position is critical to the city’s goal of bringing youth in need and disengaged youth and families into structured mobile recreation activities designed to positively impact teen and youth development and reduce youth crime and victimization in the community. This position will assist in providing leadership in the development, operation and delivering programs in an outreach capacity in surrounding park and school facilities in a manner which will assure high quality safe public use and promote and schedule activities consistent with Department goals and objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ Develop, implement and supervise mobile recreation opportunities in Parks and apartment complexes.
+ Youth and Teen engagement in mobile sites and Zanewood facility.
+ Develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations
+ Develop positive relationships with youth attending programs at the center; prepare for, lead, and clean-up after program activities.
+ Provide daily implementation and on-site supervision and support for art programming in facility and outreach.
+ Partner with other agencies to provide services and programs both at Zanewood center and in the community.
+ Assist in providing direction and detailed information to maintenance staff, customer service staff, and police security.
+ Understand policies and procedures to ensure safe environment exists for all participants; maintain order, complete required reports.
+ Maintain accurate records including attendance, registration, participation level, accident/incident reports, and other program reports.
+ Ensures Youth Program Quality Assessments (YPQA) action plans are implemented and that all staff is trained in YPQA and evaluation tactics for program delivery.
+ Works with contractors (youth development) to deliver high quality programs.
+ Follow personnel procedures and recommend corrective actions on disciplinary issues that arise.
+ Assist with ongoing art and engagement program development; gather program idea feedback from youth.
+ Promote programs and activities to youth in the community, at events, and in the schools
+ Assist in recruiting youth to participate in youth leadership and art opportunities within the community where youth input is requested.
+ Attend all staff development and training programs and staff meetings.
+ Train staff and transport supplies to all Mobile recreation locations in apartments and parks in community.
+ Transport teens to community program sites using the city’s 12 & 15 passenger vans.
+ Oversee youth and adult volunteers/service projects at Zanewood for required hours.
+ Recommend policies and procedures for facility and participants.
+ Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising seasonal staff for mobile recreation sites.
+ Coordinate and partner with School district 279 for After school programs and behavior management.
+ Coordinate and partner with School district/apartment complex management to coordinate summer mobile recreation up to 15 sites.
+ Assist with Budget preparation for art programming and mobile recreation.
+ Other job duties as assigned or apparent.
Qualifications or requirements
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation, Leisure & Recreation, Youth Development or a highly related field.
Three (3) years’ experience working in youth development activities with teens and/or youth in afterschool programs, summer camp and family events which includes experience with participants in need from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered (e.g., Associate’s degree in Parks & Recreation, Leisure & Recreation, Youth Development or a highly related field and 5 years’ experience working in youth development activities with teens and/or youth in afterschool programs, summer camp and family events which includes experience with participants in need from a variety of cultural backgrounds.)
Valid driver’s license
CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within first 3 months of employment
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Experience developing and implementing recreation programming for youth.
Experience supervising, scheduling and training seasonal staff to implement mobile recreation programming.
Experience collecting data, implementing evaluation measures and assessment of recreation programming.
Ability to work in a loud, noisy environment.
Ability to enforce recreation center and mobile recreation site rules.
Ability to relate to and serve a variety of people with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Ability to learn and use the community resources available in critical and emergency situations.
Experience implementing recreation programming in apartment complexes and parks.
Experience designing, implementing and art education and engagement.
Experience working with public including; families, apartment managers, schools and partners, requiring tact and courtesy and quality customer service.
Ability to provide meaningful, quality, and enriching programs for a wide spectrum of youth, teens, families and community members.

Trained in facilitating group conversations and consensus building activities and lead groups to action.

Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Laotian, Russian, Somali or Vietnamese language(s).
