Job description

The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota is accepting applications for a part-time instructor to teach ENGL 3704 Introduction to Editing and Publishing, a required undergraduate course for students completing the Certificate in Editing and Publishing at the University of Minnesota. This class will introduce students to the tools and techniques of editing (grammar, syntax, workflow, style) as well as substantive editing, shaping features, electronic editing, and effectively communicating editorial issues to authors, publishers, and other collaborators. In addition, we are looking for instructors sensitive to the complex issues of power that surround prescriptive English: as part of our mission to create a diverse and inclusive department, we are looking to convey to students how the many language varieties of English can be part of the mission of editing and publishing.

This 9-month position (August 30, 2021–May 29, 2022) will include teaching one in-person section of ENGL 3704 during the Fall 2021 semester on Monday and Wednesday 5:45-7:35 p.m. and one in-person section of ENGL 3704 during the Spring 2022 semester on Monday and Wednesday 5:45-7:35 p.m.

• Prepare for and teach classes in ways that best help students to learn
• Create Canvas course sites and syllabi that conform to department and University policies
• Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in field of practice
• Hold regular office hours that are clearly announced in advance
• Respond to student needs and questions professionally and in a timely manner
• Evaluate student learning and assign grades
• Communicate instructor evaluation process to students
• Receive department and University emails and respond in a timely manner
• Understand and follow all relevant University policies and procedures and participate in trainings, as required
• Participate in relevant departmental meetings
• Submit annual review materials

Starting rate is $12,000 ($6,000 per class) paid out biweekly during the appointment period.

Qualifications or requirements

Teaching Specialists

Minimum qualifications:
• B.A. degree in English or a closely related field
• A minimum of one year college teaching experience or three years of demonstrated successful professional experience in editing or publishing

Preferred qualifications:
• M.A. degree in English or a closely related field and two years or more college teaching experience and broad familiarity with English language, literature, and writing


Minimum qualifications:
• Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree in English or closely related field is required
• A minimum of two years college teaching experience

Preferred qualifications:
• Three years or more college teaching experience and a broad familiarity with English language, literature, and writing
• Preference is given to applicants with expertise in subject matter specific to a particular course.
