Job description

The Northfield Arts Guild seeks an energetic arts administrator to lead the organization in accomplishing its mission in developing, supporting, and providing quality, inclusive artistic experiences in Northfield, an evolving community where we believe the arts fuel vibrant growth.

Established in 1959, the Northfield Arts Guild offers high-quality programming in theater, dance, music, visual and arts education to persons of all ages, abilities, and levels of experience. With average annual revenue of $531,000 a year, the Arts Guild serves approximately 40,000 people a year and has a typical annual membership of 400-500 households. The organization has a healthy balance sheet and is actively funding depreciation to maintain its two historic properties.

We seek an imaginative leader who can continue the vision of the Northfield Arts Guild as an anchor arts organization in Northfield, foster increasing diversity, equity and inclusion, and manage the staff and operations of a vital multi-disciplinary community-based arts center. We seek a well-organized person, with a proven track record in fundraising, who can collaborate and/or partner with other nonprofit organizations in a burgeoning arts town and garner support for the Guild from a variety of sources. This person will need to be creative and flexible in their thinking and efforts in support of the Guild.


Strategic vision and leadership
• Work with the Board of Directors to determine/update and operationalize the strategic plan.
• Work with the board, staff and volunteers to ensure programming is relevant, of high quality, and exciting to current and prospective new audiences.
• Develop and implement evaluation strategies across programs, continually assessing programs’ efficacy in reaching established goals and outcomes.
• Maintain a working knowledge of trends and developments in the fields of fine arts.

Fund development and communications
• Work closely with the Board of Directors on the development of annual and long-term fund development plans.
• Oversee and conduct fundraising with individuals as well as with organizations, businesses and government. This will include significant public contact.
• Conduct and/or facilitate grant writing for operations and arts programs, including communications with area foundations and grant making organizations
• Facilitate maintenance and management of the Altru donor/member database.
• Expand the base of support of the Northfield Arts Guild.
• Develop and manage annual fundraising events in concert with staff and board committees.

Community engagement and outreach
• Maintain a leadership role for the Guild in the Northfield community through collaborations and partnerships with other arts efforts and organizations in Northfield.
• Build strong collaborative connections with our membership and volunteers.
• Attract and build diverse community of new members.
• Articulate the Guild’s mission and advance its value and programs through a range of communication strategies, constituent meetings, surveys, participation in a wide range of community organizations and activities, a dynamic website, and an ongoing program of formal and informal public relations (the ED will listen to the community and help the Northfield Arts Guild respond to membership needs).
• Facilitate communication between the Board of Directors and the staff, and between the Guild and the community.

Human Resources and Staff Management
• Hire and train staff to accomplish the goals of the organization within budget.
• Supervise and motivate the staff and ensure they have the tools they need to carry out their assigned duties and are held accountable for standard operating procedures and goals.
• Manage staff performance through appropriate and regular assessment processes, including regular check-ins and yearly performance reviews.
• Maintain a positive climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.

Financial & facilities management
• Plan, organize, control, and evaluate the budget and operations of the Northfield Arts Guild.
• Oversee the care and maintenance of Guild facilities (including the Center for the Arts building and the Northfield Arts Guild Theater building, a few blocks away).
• Manage or facilitate management of IT infrastructure of the Northfield Arts Guild.
• Oversee the care and maintenance of the Northfield Arts Guild Assets.
• Process donations and memberships and manage prompt acknowledgements.

Board engagement
• Establish close, effective relationships with board members, particularly the Chair, and assist the Board in carrying out its governance responsibilities.
• Keep the Board fully informed about important factors influencing the organization.
• Engage the Board in broadening their relationships with Guild stakeholders and participating in fund development activity.

Qualifications or requirements


• A flexible, friendly, and dynamic communication style focused on relationship building is imperative for this position.
• Experience with, and interest in, raising funds from a variety of resources, including individuals, businesses, foundations, and government.
• Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to program and business planning.
• Willingness to reside in Northfield; will play a major role in community arts leadership Ability to coach staff, manage and develop high performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
• Agility in thinking; able to change directions and priorities as necessary; able to recognize and create opportunities.
• Understanding of marketing; can promote the Northfield Arts Guild in and out of the community.
• Proven ability to work with and appreciate volunteers, the backbone of this non-profit organization.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate across artistic disciplines and among board, staff, members, community, and donors; ability to tell the story of the Northfield Arts Guild and to excite others about its programs.

Essential: Bachelor’s Degree
Desirable: Master’s Degree in related field

Essential: Minimum of 4 years post-graduate experience in arts management.
Desirable: Proven success in a leadership position in the arts/culture sector, and a track record of effectively leading others in carrying out goals and accomplishing stated outcomes
