Job description

With the departure of its Director of Marketing & Communications after eight very successful years of leadership, the Weisman Art Museum (WAM) at the University of Minnesota seeks to hire an Interim Marketing & Communications Director for a 12-month period (November 2019-November 2020).

DIRECTS ALL COMMUNICATIONS, PUBLIC RELATIONS, AND MARKETING ACTIVITIES:
Communication/Marketing and Public Relations Oversight

Media relations: Develops and executes local, regional, and national trade and general media relations strategies and plans to support earned media coverage of WAM’s exhibitions, educational programs, special events, leadership transition, and other general museum operations.
● Writes, edits, and distributes informational materials to support earned media coverage
● Serves as primary media contact and often primary spokesperson
● Serves as key contact for museum-related information to the University and its marketing and PR/media relations teams

Exhibition, educational, and special events programming promotion: Works with museum’s leadership team subject matter experts (curators, education director, and student engagement director) to develop and execute marketing communications plans that support programming success.
● Develops and produces direct print and digital promotion
● Works with Communications Assistant on developing social media strategy and posts
● Develops and executes media relations strategy to secure earned coverage
● Develops and places print, digital, out-of-home advertising, as needed and budgeted
● Develops and produces any collateral, signage, or bannering required to support the programming activity or event
● Attends many events and supports their success by engaging with attending media, artistic guests, key donors, etc.

Fund development support: Works with the Director of Development to develop appropriate marketing communications support to meet annual charitable revenue (fundraising/membership) goals and the completion of WAM’s capital campaign.
● Identify and develop sponsorship opportunities and placements in WAM’s communications for recognition
● Work with Development in creating communications to donors and members, including monthly emails, VIP receptions, fundraising events, special events for donors, crowdfunding, Give to the Max Day, Year-End Appeal, annual list of donors for the newsletter, art mob invitations
● Work with Development in creating communications to donors to the Capital Campaign including email solicitations, campaign updates, invites to campaign fundraising events, proposals for high capacity donor solicitations
● Work with Development in creating communications to Members and Student Members, including Member informational material for the Visitor Services desk, new member emails and alerts
● Promote fundraising via social media
● Work with Development in coordinating the Development Communications calendar for the year (created in March for upcoming FY)

General communications support: With the Communications Associate, manages the development and maintenance of regular communications to University and general public target audiences.
● Writes, edits, and oversees the design, development, usability, and maintenance of the museum’s website
● Oversees the design, development, and production of the museum’s newsletter, which is published 3 times/year
● Writes, edits, and oversees the design, development, and production of the museum’s
e-blasts, which are published 10-15 times/year
● Oversees the design, development, and production of the museum’s membership/donor communication, which are updated and published annually

Retail store promotion: Works with the WAM Shop manager to develop and execute marketing and communications plans and support achieving overall revenue goals.
● Develops and produces direct print and digital promotion
● Develops strategy for social media content (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
● Develops and executes media relations strategy to secure earned coverage
● Develops and produces any collateral, signage, or bannering required to support planned retail programs

Market research: Works with staff to create data gathering systems to monitor the performance of marketing communications activities and inform planning.

Volunteer leadership communications: Serves as conduit to the museum’s Colleagues Advisory Board (CAB) of key volunteers.
● Attends monthly CAB meetings (September through June) to provide updates on issues related to marketing communications

Qualifications or requirements

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
● 6+ years’ experience in marketing, communications or public relations
● 4+ years’ experience in a management role
● Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or a related field
● Exceptional communication skills
● Demonstrated experience in creating successful marketing and public relations programs
● Ability to initiate and monitor several simultaneous projects

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
● Previous interim or short-term assignments that required fast-paced learning and demonstrated performance in dealing with change and ambiguity
● College or university environment marketing communications experience
● Arts-related organization marketing communications experience
