I am a member of the Chelsea Heights Elementary school Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). As a school within the Saint Paul Public School District, last year we experienced funding cuts due to ongoing enrollment decline (a trend in all public schools in recent years locally). As a result of these cuts, both the Art Teacher and Music Teacher positions were eliminated for the ’24-25 school year, and the art program continues to be decimated for the ’25-26 year as well. Students in K-5 at our school will no longer receive instruction in art and it is heartbreaking for the PTO and the larger school community. We are also worried that this will only lead to further decline in enrollment and funding cuts.
As a PTO, we have formed a committee for the support of art and music at Chelsea Heights to continue to provide access to art and music education for the students at this school. We have a very diverse student body and there are many students who rely on their public education as their sole exposure to the practice of art. As part of our committee work, we are looking for volunteers to visit Chelsea Heights once or throughout the school year to provide students with exposure to art education. The school can provide the space and the PTO can fundraise to purchase supplies needed for various art projects that an artist may be willing to provide instruction for. There would be a licensed teacher in any workshop/classroom setting at all times.
K-5 is a large age range and we recognize that. We would be open to scheduling an artist for any age range, for any length of time, who may be willing to come help students make art!
This description is vague because we aren’t sure what the interest in the local artist community would be for education outreach and are open to any and all potential ways to engage our young students!
