We are seeking emerging artists for Moonplay Cinema’s Experimental Film Workshop led by visual artist and curator, Sabrina Ford. This 6-week program will give an overview on the histories, contexts, and philosophies behind experimental film and the usage of the medium as a liberatory tool within the many political countercultures of the oppressed majority.
Moonplay Cinema is an artist-run project that promotes and celebrates auteur-driven experimental, documentary, and narrative filmmakers. We are committed to supporting underserved and underrepresented filmmakers who work across various genres and mediums. We use community-organizing strategies to create opportunities to exhibit artwork, hold workshops, and produce content.
Who should apply:
Those with a particular interest in Moving Image/Experimental Cinema as a creative medium are encouraged to apply. This cohort program is great for someone just starting as a filmmaker, someone looking to add film to their art practice, and/or someone who has some experience in film and is seeking more support and community.
The workshop will cover:
Why Experimental Film? Philosophies and History
Mediums and Techniques
Working with Archives
Projection (How to screen your work)
Film as Practice/Career Guidance

October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3, 10
Location: Hennepin County Library – Central
Eligibility:
Must be a resident of Minnesota
Be of Emerging Artist status
Cannot be enrolled in a degree-granting program
Must be able to attend all cohort sessions
About Your Facilitator:
Sabrina Ford is a moving image artist and curator based out of the Twin Cities with a specialization in diary filmmaking and projection. Her practice is centered deeply around womanist/anarchist philosphies of filmmaking, and she is currently researching Vodou ancestor veneration and its transmutations within the processes of video, and producing the public access television series, Dream Chambers.
If you have questions about our cohort or need support or technical assistance, please email us at moonplaycinema@gmail.com.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Moonplay Cinema is a fiscally sponsored project of Springboard for the Arts.
