Open call for emerging artists to be considered for a unique opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversation with sculptor and painter Marela Zacarías. Zacarías will offer professional feedback in portfolio reviews with emerging and student artists interested in a fine arts career. If selected, you will meet with Zacarías for about 30 minutes to share your work and engage in discussion. Come with questions for Zacarías about creating a successful career in the arts!

This event is organized and hosted by the Thrivent Art Collection and will take place 9am-2pm on Thursday, March 14, 2024, in the Thrivent Corporate Center, downtown Minneapolis. Zacarías’s works have been exhibited internationally and are represented in numerous private and corporate collections around the world, including the Thrivent Art Collection and Facebook HQ.

Call for applications

Deadline to submit: Tuesday, March 5, 2024

To apply, email ArtCollection@Thrivent.com with the following information:

• your name
• contact information, including a current email address
• Resume or CV (desired, but not required)
• a brief artist statement
• a selection of work as image attachments (no more than 5 images, jpeg format) with accompanying image list (title, date, medium, and dimensions)
• a link to a website with images of your work, if applicable

Selected participants will be notified via email by Friday, March 8, 2024. Participants may bring a selection of 2-3 artworks to share with Zacarías during their assigned time. If you make large-scale or sculptural objects, please bring an image portfolio of 2-3 works instead.

Marela Zacarías creates expressive painted sculptures influenced by global textiles and 20th-century abstract art. Her works have been exhibited internationally and are represented in numerous private and corporate collections around the world, including the Thrivent Art Collection. She has received large-scale permanent site-specific commissions from NYU Langone, NY, NY; Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Seattle, WA; Facebook HQ, Menlo Park, CA; The Trammell Crow Center, Dallas, TX; the William Vale in Brooklyn, NY and the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey, Mexico.

Zacarías received a BA and an Honorary Doctor in Fine Arts degree from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, and her MFA from Hunter College, New York. She currently lives between Brooklyn, NY and Mexico City, Mexico.
