The Resource Lab offers individual artists and small organizations access to services and equipment, in an informal, self-directed environment. Artists can use the Lab for artwork documentation, design, digitization and general technical assistance on small projects in the Resource Center during lab hours, and receive assistance from a Technical Specialist.

Projects we can assist with include scanning 2D artworks, digitizing slides, negatives and older digital formats (3.5" floppy disks, CD-ROMs), photo documentation for 2D and 3D artworks, product photography for artworks such as jewelry and ceramics, and image sizing and editing.

The following equipment is available:

+ Two iMac 27-inch workstations
+ Adobe Photoshop 2022
+ Epson Expression 11000XL Graphics Arts scanner (large format scanning up to 12.2" x 17.2")
+ Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner (including adapters for scanning 35mm slides, negatives, or medium-format film)
+ NEEWER photo studio light box, 20” x 20”
+ 9' black and white seamless background photo backdrop
+ LED lighting for artwork documentation (camera not included)

Hours are 12 noon to 4:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays.

Terms of Service

+ Use of the facilities is offered free of charge, but appointments must be made in advance using the form below.
+ Artists are welcome to use the Resource Lab for short-term projects, such as those described above. We are currently not equipped to offer ongoing assistance or facilities for longer-term projects, such as film editing, exhibition creation or commercial work. If you have any questions about your project needs, please check in with us.
+ In order to ensure as many artists as possible can access the space, artists are asked to limit their use of the Resource Lab to twice a month.

Services

Imaging and Editing Tutorial (60 mins.): Learn how to use the scanners, and handle basic image editing with Photoshop, Bridge and other software. You may bring up to five works on paper under 11" x 17" to receive assistance scanning with the Technical Specialist.

Photo Documentation Tutorial (90 mins.): Learn how to photograph your artwork in a hands-on tutorial with the Technical Specialist. You may bring up to five pieces to document with a camera: paintings, sculptures, jewelry, drawings, framed pieces, or other work.

Space Use (60 min. blocks): If you've done a tutorial with us and feel ready to work on your own, or you already have those skills, the space is open for your use! We'll help set up the space, and you can bring artwork to document, whether using the scanners or photo space. We can provide assistance and answer questions as you work, though you should have a basic degree of familiarity with the equipment.
