The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
We believe that an individual’s access to quality tax assistance and financial refunds should not depend solely on one’s ability to pay for such services. We work to move Minnesotans out of poverty by providing pathways to enhance income by providing free tax assistance, partnering with financial institutions, and providing technical assistance.
The Volunteer Tax Assistance Program (VTAP) prepares tax returns free of charge for University of Minnesota students as well as community members. All clients must have unadjusted gross income less than $57,000. VTAP is free, fast, safe, and IRS certified.
