We are seeking an artist to design and paint a large-scale public mural on a retail business (Vegan East) in the Morris Park neighborhood of South Minneapolis. This mural will be located along E 55th St. and is intended to spark reflection, connection, and compassion for animals.
About the Project
This project is a collaboration between volunteers at the Minneapolis non-profit Compassionate Action for Animals, and the beloved local bakery Vegan East. Our goal is to establish a large-scale mural that inspires compassion for all species, including companion animals, wildlife, and farm animals. The final design will encouraging viewers from all backgrounds to reflect on the relationship between humans and other animals. While we will consider designs without words, we are envisioning a design that combines compelling imagery with thoughtful text, such as:
“Be kind to all kinds”
“Choose compassion.”
“Someone not something”
Through inclusive outreach, education, and community-building, we envision a world where all animals—human and nonhuman—can thrive. Our hope is for this mural to be a landmark of compassion and a starting point for dialogue around animal protection in our community.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for an artist who:
Has painted at least one mid to large size mural
Demonstrates strong visual storytelling skills
Is enthusiastic about themes of compassion for animals and social impact
Is collaborative and open to feedback throughout the design process
Meets deadlines
Tentative Timeline:
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Finalists will be selected by June 5, 2026.
Finalists will be given instructions to submit 1-2 paid sketches.
A final sketch will be selected by July 3, 2026.
The selected artist will work with the committee to gather feedback and finalize the sketch by July 20, 2026.
Installation of the mural should be completed within a weeklong period in August or September of 2026.
Additional Information:
The usable dimensions of the wall are 10.5′ by 34′. The wall is stucco and was recently repainted in a dark shade of blue, but could be painted a new base color by the muralist. The muralist does not need to detail all of the space, but we will prioritize applicants who plan to do so. Interactive elements will be encouraged.
We are in the process of fundraising. We expect our total funds for this project (including supplies) to be between $5,000 – $10,000. As a nonprofit – and with hopes of potentially installing other murals – we will give priority to lower-cost estimates.
Applicants do not need to be vegetarian or vegan, but we are hoping to find a values-aligned artist who sees animal protection as an important part of global justice. We especially encourage artists from diverse backgrounds to apply.
