Call for Artists: Two Harbors Mural Project

Two Harbors Arts & Beautification

The Two Harbors Public Arts and Beautification Commission (Commission) has initiated a mural project to further increase the presence of public art and beautify its historic downtown. The artwork will be located on the front of the bandshell in Thomas Owens Park, 3rd Avenue and 6th Street.

Thomas Owens Park, home of the Two Harbors Bandshell, sits on the edge of the downtown business district on Waterfront Drive (6th street). This space hosts local artists throughout the summer, including the Two Harbors City Band, Two Harbors Ukulele Group (THUG), Heritage Days entertainment, and local youth dance groups. The mural will be placed on the seasonal panels that close off the stage for winter. The scene will enhance the park during off-season, while showcasing community support for the arts. The mural panels are 4’ X 8’ LP composite siding, currently painted gray. In total, there are 16 full-size panels and 4 half-size panels (4’ X 4’). Panels will be available for the artist to take to an off-site location to complete the mural before installation in late 2026, if desired. The mural can also be completed after panels are back in place for off-season 2026-2027.

Artist proposals will be solicited by the Commission. The Commission will review the artist submissions and identify their preferred artist. The City of Two Harbors will award the final contract, in consultation with the Commission. Chosen artist will be asked to submit design alterations for review prior to final mural installation. The Commission is not required to select from the applications received if, in the Commission’s and/or the City’s judgement, the relevance, quality, or the qualifications of the artists are not appropriate.
