Springboard for the Arts is thrilled to announce the opening of a community ice rink at our home on 262 University Avenue West in Saint Paul, Minnesota!

Beginning in February, Springboard will be partnering with a local organizations Brownbody and Art Shanty Projects to present “Springboard on Ice,” a series of free winter events, installations, and creative gatherings! We hope you'll join us for the following free events hosted at the rink with Brownbody and Art Shanty Projects:

Mini Skating Lessons with Brownbody
Sunday, February 5 and 12
1:00 - 3:30pm Central Time

Brownbody will be activating the space by offering mini lessons and previewing a bit of artistic work. In the first 45 minutes, Brownbody instructors will offer a 15 minute mini lesson covering the basics of skating followed by 30 minutes of free skate time with the Brownbody team. This will be followed by a short presentation of artistic works presented and choreographed by Brownbody artists, apprentices, and Brownbody Founder and Artistic/Executive director Deneane Richburg. The presentation will be followed by another mini lesson and more free skate time.

Winter Village and Activities with Art Shanty Projects
Saturday, February 25 and March 4
1:00 - 3:30pm Central Time

Art Shanty Projects has been creating winter villages (usually on frozen lake ice!) since 2004. They will be installing a mini village at Springboard where visitors are invited to engage with the artists at a few temporary structures - known as ‘shanties’ - and participate in performances and art actions. It’s art, in action, together. Let's play!

About our partners:

Brownbody - Grounded in African diasporic perspectives, Brownbody’s mission is to build artistic experiences that disrupt biased narratives and prompt audiences to engage as active participants in the journey. Brownbody accomplishes this through a blend of modern dance, theater, social justice, and figure skating. Learn more about their work at www.brownbody.org.

Art Shanty Projects - intentionally creates an impermanent art village on Minnesota lake ice amid changing climate and environment. With a spirit of embracing challenges through creativity, they support an ecosystem that inspires everyone to create and participate in art, thrive in winter, and build community.
