Navigating the Publishing Process

Join a panel of publishing professionals, including Anitra Budd of Colfax Wordsmiths, Claire Laine, Director of Publicity at Graywolf Press, and Mary Taris, Founder of Strive Publishing, as they share insights and practical advice for writers looking to get their work into the world. Panelists will discuss submitting manuscripts to publishers, working with literary agents, and exploring hybrid and self-publishing options. This conversation will be moderated by Sung Yung Shin, Artist Career Consultant at Springboard for the Arts.
Anitra Budd (she/her) is an experienced freelance editor, copywriter, consultant, and public speaker whose clients include Fortune 500 corporations, literary publishers, marketing agencies, universities, and local and national magazines. Over the course of her career, she’s presented workshops on publishing, editing, and organization for artists at a variety of venues. She holds BA and MA degrees from the University of Minnesota. Claire Laine (she/her) is the Director of Publicity at Graywolf Press, an independent, nonprofit literary publisher of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and work in translation. In her current role, she oversees media campaigns, book tours, and social media strategy for Graywolf books and authors. She previously held publicity positions at Milkweed Editions and Harvard University Press. In her free time, she writes, gardens, and spends time with her wife and dog.
Mary Taris (she/her) is the Founder of Strive Publishing. She is also an educator with fifteen years of teaching experience, from grade school, to middle school English, to adult English language learners. Just as Taris felt called to help bring diversity into the teaching field, she is now on a mission to help bring more diverse books into schools, the community, and the world. Sun Yung Shin (she/they) is a Korean-born poet, writer, and cultural worker. She is the author, or editor, of 11 published books and has been awarded fellowships and grants from the Bush Foundation, McKnight Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Regional Arts Council, & MacDowell. Her work has received regional, national, and international recognition including a Minnesota Book Award, Society of Midland Authors Award, & others.
