Our panel of professionals from the publishing industry, including publishers, bookstore owners and writers will try to take some of the mystery out of the ins and outs of the publishing business. A list of panelists will be announced closer to the panel date. This panel is part of a series of Work of Art + workshops and panels presented in partnership with Hennepin County Library.

This workshop is a part of Work of Art+, workshops and panels that complement the Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists series, whose curriculum is always available for free download. Or you can buy a copy of the book.

Panelists: J. Bailey Hutchinson, Jas Perry (bio) and Mary Taris (Strive Publishing). Moderated by Springboard Artist Career Consultant, Anitra Budd.

J. Bailey Hutchinson (she/her) is the author of GUT, selected by Patricia Smith for the 2022 Miller Williams Poetry Prize, and a recipient of a 2023 Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. She earned her MFA from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where she served as Poetry Editor for the Arkansas International and Assistant Director of the Open Mouth Literary Center. Hutchinson's work has been featured by Ninth Letter, Beloit, Muzzle Magazine, BOAAT, and more. She teaches creative writing workshops through a number of organizations and works as an editor for Milkweed Editions. Jas Perry is an agent with KT Literary representing children's books and graphic novels. She previously worked in editorial at Scholastic and Levine Querido. She represents an international list specializing in communities and narratives historically excluded from traditional publishing. Jas is the Director of Special Projects at POC in Publishing and a member of the Association of American Literary Agents. She was born in New York City and raised by a family of readers in the US and Japan. She writes as J.P. Takahashi and her debut TOKYO NIGHT PARADE released with HarperCollins in 2023. Anitra Budd (she/her) is an experienced freelance editor, copywriter, educator, and public speaker whose clients include Fortune 500 corporations, literary publishers, marketing agencies, universities, and local and national magazines. She currently teaches editing for MFA students at the University of Nevada - Reno and has taught undergrad students at Macalester College and the University of Minnesota. Over the course of her career, she has presented on publishing and editing topics at a variety of venues, including SUNY–Binghamton, Hamline University, the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association, and the Minnesota Book Publishers Roundtable at Open Book, and has made guest appearances on MPR News with Kerri Miller.
